Who's it for and what's it about?

This course is for anyone who wants to get to grips with how to manage information in the workplace in a legally compliant, efficient and professional way. It is especially relevant to frontline staff who deal with members of the public, contractors and other service providers. Technical services staff and those working in maintenance roles will also find this course beneficial as they develop their administrative knowledge and skills to enhance their careers.

Course content

  • The purpose of record-keeping for the organisation including legal compliance
  • The essential content of records needed for internal and external use
  • Storage, indexing and information retrieval systems (manual and IT, as appropriate)
  • Confidentiality/security of records (level of access, backup, virus protection, legal aspects)
  • Data Protection Act 1998 & GDPR 2018
  • Basics of using spreadsheets
  • Basics of using databases
  • Advantages and disadvantages of e-mail, internet and intranet
  • The method of IT backup within an organisation
  • Security of information, cyber security and confidentiality

 

Learning outcomes

  1. Understand the need to maintain information systems
  2. Understand the use and application of IT applications for information systems in an organisation

 

As this is a unit of the ilm Award in leadership and management you will be asked to complete a short work-based assignment to help you transfer the learning from the classroom to you workplace.


The task will requires you to show your understanding of how information systems are used within your organisation and some of the IT applications used.

 

(Costs include ilm registration fee and assessment fees. Does not include a licence for delegates to use Microsoft Project in their workplace)
